In Visons of the dark night

I have dreamed of joy departed

But a waking dream of life and

..light

Has left me broken hearted

That dream--that holy dream

while all the world was chiding

has cheeded me as a lovely beam

a lonely spirit guiding

Ah what is not a deam by day

To him whose eyes are cast

on things around hom with a ray

turned back upon thw past?

Take this kiss upon the brow

and, in parting from you now

thus much let me avow

you are not wrong who deem

that my days have been a drem;

yet if hope has flown away

in a night or in a day

in a vision or in none,

is it therefore the less gone?

all that we see or seen

is but a dream within a dream.

what though that light, through

..storm and noght

so trembled from afar

what could there be more purely

..bright

in truth's day-star?
